My first experience of Santorini wasn’t specifically a good one, OK let me not exaggerate! It was an amazing trip, but the weather was pretty shit! It practically rained for the entire time we were there, don’t get me wrong we still had fun but didn’t quite get to have the full Santorini experience. We have recently just booked to go back this summer! Wahey! I’m really excited!
We flew from London Gatwick to Santorini, which was a 3 hour and 55 minute flight with easy jet. We booked the whole package with them, and I am quite pleased with the deal we got. Once we had landed and made our way through immigration, which was really quick as Santorini airport is ridiculously tiny. We were greeted by our driver to take us to our hotel, it’s a bit of a blur but I’m sure our transfer time was only about 10 minutes.
We stayed in town of Fira at the El Greco Resort & Spa, which was absolutely beautiful! I was pleasantly surprised, as I’m one of those people that will not book a hotel before checking Trip Advisor 20 times first. I read all the reviews; check all the photos, but with this one there were not as many pictures as I would have liked. So I booked this on the reviews alone, so when I arrived I was surprised at how beautiful it was. I mean Santorini is a really picturesque island, so its not surprising the hotel was so beautiful.
The room we had was a suite, which had an upstairs loft area with a double bed and 2 twin beds downstairs with a small central area which had a dining table and a sofa. Perfect for a group of 4 really! I was really happy with this as it meant we all got to be together in the same room, which was more like a mini apartment.
The resort was really big, much bigger than it looked from the front where our room was. One day the rain was really bad, so we decided to go and work out in the gym. It took us a good 5 minutes to get there in one of those golf buggies. We lost count how many swimming pools they had; they just kept appearing in different areas. We didn’t get to visit the spa, on this trip so I can’t really comment on it.
We had the half board option at our hotel, which meant we could have 2 meals per day. Breakfast and then either lunch or dinner, we chose the option of breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was great, they had generous buffet consisting of the normal eggs, beans, sausages, baked beans, bacon etc… As for dinner we only had that once and the selection just really wasn’t for us. We ended up ordering from the A la carte menu rather than opting for the buffet, and we were still disappointed. So my top tip for staying at El Greco would be to book the bed and breakfast option, so not to be disappointed with the food. Which is exactly what I have done for my trip this summer!
The Food options in and around Santorini were lovely, we had Gyros for lunch many times. Gyros’ are traditional greek street food and basically consists of kebab meat, in a flat bread wrap with chips, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce. I could eat one everyday they are so yummy! You can grab these for between 2 and 4 euro’s, so perfect if your’e travelling on a budget! I would definitely recommend going to either Lucky’s Souvlakis or Obelix Psitopoleio, for your first gyros experience. There are many dinner options around the island; we were only there for 3 nights and the first night we had dinner in our hotel, which was a big thumbs down. The second night we ate in cute little restaurant in Fira, which I can’t remember the name of; we basically grabbed the first place we could find to get out of the rain lol! The third night we managed to see the beautiful sunset in Oia and had dinner overlooking the beautiful views.
Santorini is a really beautiful island; the most picturesque I’ve ever seen! It really looks like all of the pictures you see on instagram. I didn’t get to see as much of it as I would have liked the first time as the weather was so bad, it did make me appreciate it’s beauty though and make me want to go back. The main thing I loved about Santorini was that we were only there for a short period of time, but there is so much to see and do. Its a real sightseer’s paradise; its one of those places I definitely suggest chucking on a pair of converse and exploring on foot. There is so much to see and explore, every step you take is another beautiful panoramic view. Oia is place to be when it comes to the sunset, so if you can only do one thing in Santorini it would have to be that!
My first experience of Santorini was amazing; I can’t wait to return this summer, I already have so many things I’m excited to do!
