Mem and Laz Angel
Not to long ago, me and the girls met up for a much needed catch up! Mem and Laz was the place on the agenda…I love Turkish cuisine so was quite excited.
Let me start with the décor…I was actually confused at first, Mem and Laz is part of a small strip of restaurants in Angel Islington that appear to be converted houses.
When you walk in the décor is quite dark and cramped but then as you walk through in to the main section the décor becomes really amazing.
To start off the service wasn’t that great, they were not overly busy and I arrived late so the rest of the girls were already seated. I feel like they should have been aware of me coming in, and seen as the rest of my table had already ordered their drinks, the waiter should have came over and took my drink order. Instead, after long wait I had to call a waiter over to order my cocktail…
I opted for a strawberry daiquiri, which was yummy and strong! It always annoys me when, I can’t taste the alcohol in a cocktail, I mean if I wanted fruit juice and ice that’s what I would have ordered.
For starter I ordered the chargrilled halloumi salad, this was beautiful. It was easily one of the best salads I’ve ever had. It was basically grilled halloumi, on a bed of tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, mixed leaves, red onions and sun-dried tomatoes. I’m not a fan of sun-dried tomatoes, but other than that I would definitely go back for this salad.
As a main I had the mixed grill; when trying new restaurant’s I always like to try as much as possible without breaking the bank. So the mixed grill, is always a good choice as it has an assortment of grilled meats. Yum!
My first thought when it arrived, was where is the rest? Why did it seem so small, there wasn’t even enough rice, this was made up by the salad. Mem and Laz you let me down, this meal was definitely not satisfying. The meat was ok; slightly burnt but I have no real complaints about it. Garlic sauce would have gone really well with this, but after asking the waiter, who knows how many time (I lost count). I had almost finished my meal by the time he managed to bring it.
I had warm chocolate brownie for dessert, this was nice but far too big! The portion size is big enough to share.
Would I go back? Maybe, but I’m not in a hurry too. The service needs improvement, some staff training maybe.
